Kelso is a village in Scott County, Missouri, United States. The population was 527 at the 2000 census.

The Kelso ZIP code of 63758 appears to be for residents who wish to receive their mail at the Kelso post office; direct mail delivery in Kelso appears to use the Scott City ZIP code of 63780. The first post office was established in 1840; however, the name of the settlement was changed from Spring Hills to Kelso when the post office was reopened in 1858. The post office was closed in 1861, but it was reopened after the war in 1874 by a former Civil War bugler. A grocery store was located here as early as 1849, and a mill was located here as early as 1866. [cite book

Kelso is located at coor dms|37|11|44|N|89|33|6|W|city (37.195450, -89.551591)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 527 people, 216 households, and 147 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,653.2 people per square mile (635.9/km²). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 709.0/sq mi (272.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.34% White, 0.19% Native American, 1.33% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.09% of the population.

There were 216 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the village the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $45,294, and the median income for a family was $51,719. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $21,518 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,099. None of the families and 1.6% of the population were living below the poverty line, including no under-18s and 4.5% of those over 64.

The children from Kelso are nicknamed Children of the Corn because of the cornfields surrounding Kelso.
