Eureka is a town in Lincoln County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,017 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Eureka is located at coor dms|48|52|49|N|115|2|58|W|city (48.880265, -115.049325),GR|1 approximately convert|66|mi|km from Kalispell.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), all of it land.

History

Eureka is located on the Tobacco River in an area known as the Tobacco Valley. Eureka was founded in the early 1880s as settlers moved north from Missoula and south from Canada and was originally known as Deweyville. The Canadian fur-trapper and explorer David Thompson visited the Tobacco Valley in the early 1800s during his searches for a route to the Pacific Ocean. Eureka is home of Lincoln County High School and the Lincoln County Fair every August, and was once known as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World".

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,017 people, 431 households, and 252 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,008.6 people per square mile (388.8/km²). There were 494 housing units at an average density of 489.9/sq mi (188.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.76% White, 1.28% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.59% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 431 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.3% were non-families. 35.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $27,120, and the median income for a family was $30,268. Males had a median income of $31,731 versus $18,214 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,619. About 19.5% of families and 22.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.5% of those under age 18 and 6.4% of those age 65 or over.
