Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest

Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest

The Metropolitan Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest is part of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary. This Hungarian archdiocese is rare (not unique, compare Belgium's primas Mechelen-Brussels) in the sense that it represents two Hungarian cities, Esztergom and the national capital Budapest. The two being one diocese is because in Hungary's early history Esztergom was one of the former capitals of the Hungarian apostolic kingdom (much larger than the present republic – roughly the eastern half of the Habsburg empire).

The diocese was founded in the 10th century. Its name was changed from Archdiocese of Esztergom on May 31, 1993. It had a uniquely prominent status, see under the title of Prince primate.

Its current Archbishop is Péter Cardinal Erdő. He received this position when dr. László Cardinal Paskai became Archbishop Emeritus.
