Commercial activity

Commercial activity ranges from retail and wholesale activity (broadly along two lines - Showrooms and Shop Culture) and manufacturing. Karol Bagh also has several low and medium budget hotelsas well as residential areas. The Karol Bagh market is mainly known for is jewelery and apparel. It has a plethora of shops specializing in clothes. The area between Gurudwara Road and Ajmal Khan Road, at the Pusa Road end, specialises in car accessories. Ghaffar Market, a municipal market along a stretch of Ajmal Khan Road, specializes in smuggled electronics [cite news|title=Sony Playstation wins endgame in grey market |url=http://infotech.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1068727.cms |publisher=Indiatimes Infotech|date=2005-04-05 |accessdate=2008-09-14] and other imported items. Desh Bandhu Gupta Road runs at the edge of Karol Bagh and leads to New Delhi Railway Station which is at about a distance of 2 km. Liberty Cinema is an important landmark. History

In 1925, the Jamia Millia Islamia was shifted here from Aligarh which was later deemed to be a university [cite web |url=http://jmi.nic.in/HistoryofJamia.htm |title=History of Jamia Millia Islamia |accessdate=2008-09-14] .

Until about 1930, the Karol Bagh area was an undeveloped jungle [cite book |title=Bhangi, Scavenger in Indian Society |last=Sharma |first=Rama|year=1995 |publisher=M.D. Publications Private Limited |location=India |isbn=8185880700 |pages=165] .

The area was primarily residential with a large Muslim population until the exodus of many Muslims to Pakistan and an influx of refugees from West Punjab after Partition in 1947 [cite book |title=Neighbourhood and Social Networks In Urban India |last=Singh |first=Andrea |year=1976 |publisher=Marwah Publications |pages=67] , many of whom were traders. Karol Bagh was also home to a large Bengali community, and has one of the oldest Durga Puja in the city, though their numbers have now dwindled.

Several incidents were reported at Karol Bagh in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
