History

Lansing Mall opened to the public in July 1969.cite web |url=http://www.lansingbusinessmonthly.com/article_read.asp?articleID=2258 |title=West Side Shoppers Are Sold on the Lansing Mall |accessdate=2007-12-21 |last=Caswell |first=Christine |date= |work=The Greater Lansing Business Monthly] Originally, it included three anchor stores: The Fair (later Montgomery Ward) at the eastern end, Detroit-based Federal's at the western end, and Wurzburg's, a local chain, in the middle;fact|date=December 2007 Federal's closed its store in 1972, [cite web |url=http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F00F1FFF3B5C177B93C5AB1789D95F468785F9 |title=Store closings set by Federal's Chain |accessdate=2007-12-21 |date=1972-12-27 |work=The New York Times] and Wurzburg's was eventually converted to Knapp's.fact|date=December 2007

The former Federal's store was supplanted in 1979 by an extension of the mall's western wing, with a Hudson's department store being added at the end; Knapp's was converted to JCPenney a year later.fact|date=December 2007 A northernly expansion, completed in 1985, added Mervyns as a fourth department store.

1990s and 2000s

Lansing Mall was purchased in 1997 by General Growth Properties, who soon embarked on a $30 million renovation of the entire property. The food court was remodeled to include more seating for customers, and new restroom facilities were added.cite web |url=http://www.lansingbusinessmonthly.com/article_read.asp?articleID=3252 |title=Lansing Mall Celebrates New Look |accessdate=2007-12-21 |last=Sands |first=Amy |work=The Greater Lansing Business Monthly] Several new tenants were also added, including Barnes & Noble and Old Navy.

In May 1999, Montgomery Ward closed its operations at the mall; the eastern anchor remained vacant until 2002, when Younkers opened its first Lansing-area store in the space vacated by Montgomery Ward. Marshall Field's, which was converted from the Hudson's nameplate in 2001, was one of several nameplates to be converted to Macy's in 2006. The same year, Mervyns closed all of its Michigan operations. Steve & Barry's opened in the former Mervyns space in 2007, the same year that TJ Maxx was added.fact|date=December 2007

Possible redevelopment

In December 2007, the township board of Delta Charter Township reviewed proposals for the creation of a "downtown district" in the township. Under this plan, Lansing Mall would be renamed Delta Town Center, and redeveloped as an open-air center so that it can more easily serve as a public gathering place for the township's residents.
