Athletics at the 2000 Summer Olympics - Men's 800 metres

The men's 800 meter run at the 2000 Summer Olympics was held between September 23 and 27 in which Germany's Nils Schumann upset Denmark's world record holder and world champion Wilson Kipketer. The race was one of the closest in Olympic 800 meter history as the first three were separated by a mere 0.08 second and the first five by 0.32 second.

The first round was held on September 25 with 61 competitors in 8 heats. The first two finisher in each heat and the next 8 fastest runners advanced. (In heat 4, Marvin Watts of Jamaica was tripped and fell, and finished last. Officials accepted his reasoning that he was not at fault and allowed him to advance to the semi-finals. Thus, 25 instead of 24 runners advanced.)

In the semi-finals on September 25, 25 runners competed in 3 heats and the first two in each heat and the next two fastest runners advanced.
