RGNUL, Patiala was established in year 2006 by Punjab Government (Punjab Act No. 12 of 2006) as a public university. The 1st vice-chancellor is Dr. Gurjit Singh. The establishment of RGNUL has fulfilled a dream of having a centre of excellence in legal education in Punjab.

Currently, University is functioning from its transit campus at Mahendra Kothi, Patiala. The process of acquiring land for the university is underway. Soon, the university will shift to its permanent location at village Sidhuwal on Bhadson road, Patiala.

The university is affiliated to UGC and approved by Bar Council of India.

Admissions

Admission to different courses is through Common Law Admission Test (CLAT-2008).

* LEGAL LIONS, A Student Social Welfare Cell.A social welfare cell which aspires to work for the upliftment of the society by making people acquainted of their worth and the role played by each of them which in someway or the other contributes to the national cause. The cell endeavours to ensure that the people are fully cognisant of their legal rights and duties. Also, the objective is to find the hidden talent in all the budding aspirants who wish to make it big some day through creative activities which can further broaden their horizon. As it is a student social welfare cell, we dedicate our services exclusively for the benefit of our fellow student friends and their welfare. The cell aims at carrying out its functions with specific objectives which are ardently sought to be achieved over a passage of time. The Legal Lions cell plans the itinerary in such a way that there is at least something (if not everything) for everyone.
