Richburg is a village in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 448 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Richburg is partly within the boundaries of the Towns of Wirt and Bolivar. The community is east of Olean, New York.

History

Richburg was incorporated in 1881.

Geography

Richburg is located at coor dms|42|5|14|N|78|9|22|W|city (42.087226, -78.156080)GR|1.

The Little Genesee Creek flows through the village, which is located at the junction of New York State Route 275 and County Road 40.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 448 people, 161 households, and 121 families residing in the village. The population density was 484.5 people per square mile (188.0/km²). There were 191 housing units at an average density of 206.6/sq mi (80.2/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.88% White, 0.45% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.22% Asian, and 0.22% from two or more races. There are no Hispanics or Latinos of any race.

There were 161 households out of which 41.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 20.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the village the population was spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $21,750, and the median income for a family was $26,875. Males had a median income of $30,156 versus $15,938 for females. The per capita income for the village was $10,515. About 16.9% of families and 16.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.8% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.

Richburg is home to the Elementary Campus of the Bolivar-Richburg Central School District. Housing students in grades K - 5, the Bolivar-Richburg Elementary School provides a high-quality education for all students.
