Genco Abbandando

Genco Abbandando is a character from "The Godfather" movie series, as well as the novel, from which the movies are adapted. In the novel, as well as in a scene edited from "The Godfather", Genco is on his deathbed during the wedding of Vito Corleone's daughter, Connie Corleone. The Don, and his boys, visit Genco immediately after the wedding, and he dies soon thereafter.

Genco was Don Corleone's original "consigliere," or adviser. Tom Hagen begins the movie as the acting consigliere, a position that he apparently has held for a relatively short period of time.

As shown in The Godfather Part II Genco was a childhood friend of Don Corleone, and his family had aided young Vito, who was alone in New York. Apparently in honor of his friendship with Genco, Vito names his olive oil company, the "front" for his growing crime syndicate, "Genco Pura Olive Oil Company."

Based on statements by Sonny Corleone, Genco was thought of as an excellent consigliere. Soon after Vito is shot, and Sonny is being advised by Tom Hagen, he has an outburst, yelling; "If I had a wartime consigliere, a Sicilian, I wouldn't be in this shape! Pop had Genco, look what I got."

In "The Godfather Part II", the part of Genco is played by Frank Sivero.
