"CityBeat" is published every Wednesday with a weekly circulation of 50,000. San Diego "CityBeat" has earned strong community readership through its focus on local progressive politics, arts and music. The distribution area includes most of San Diego County, with a focus on the city of San Diego.

In 2002, Southland Publishing purchased SLAMM magazine from publisher Kevin Hellman. SLAMM's editor, Troy Johnson, became the "CityBeat"'s first arts and culture editor. Hellman is currently the publisher of "CityBeat".

In 2005, Editor David Rolland made news when, in an editorial, he asked then-mayor of San Diego, Dick Murphy, to resign. A week later, Time Magazine named Murphy No. 3 in their list of the nation's 10 Worst Mayors. Shortly after that, Murphy resigned.
