Also, two Somali soldiers died when a group of suspected Islamists armed with pistols and hand grenades attacked a police checkpoint in Howlwadag junction. January 3, 2008

*2 Ethiopian, 1 Somali soldier killedTwo Ethiopian and one Somali soldiers were killed while several civilians were wounded in renewed armed clashes with local insurgent groups in Somalia. According to local residents, the Ethiopian soldiers were shot dead by Islamist snipers in Sodonka intersection in Hodan district, south of the capital. In return, the Ethiopians fired wounding several people in the area before clashing with the insurgent groups who were using hand grenades and heavy automatic machine guns. Five people, including two civilians, were killed in the town of Wanlaweyn when police clashed with the military in a dispute over checkpoints, police said. Four other people died in clashes between Ethiopian-backed government forces and Islamist insurgents in the northern Mogadishu neighbourhood of Deyniile. *4 Somali soldiers killedNew clashes between the interim government troops and the rebel Islamist groups have erupted in the outskirt of Dinsoor, a town of Bay region, southwest of Somalia on late killing four soldiers and wounding seven others, witnesses said.

Heavily armed Islamic fighters have attacked the positions of the government forces the village of Rama-adey village, some miles away from Dinsor. The armed groups retreated back to position in the jungle and it is not known what casualty they sustained from the fighting. Most of the injured were caught in the cross shelling in Bakara market, the busiest trade centre of the country and in Hamar Jadid area. Children and women were among the victims admitted in Madina Hospital, one of few congested medical centers in the capital. A land mine explosion the day before targeted an Ethiopian military convoy in the north of the city, killing seven Ethiopian soldiers. Military analysts on condition of anonymity said "this indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas is a retaliation of yesterday's heavy loss of the Ethiopian military" The use of serious mortar and BM-30 shelling caused huge destruction in the market where it left massive casualties in one place. *16 civilians, 1 insurgent killedClashes between the Ethiopian backed government troops and local insurgent groups forced hundreds of Somalis to flee their homes in villages of Hiran region, central Somalia, local officials said. The commissioner of Jawil district, some miles west of Beledweyn, the provincial city of Hiran region, Abdulahi Abdi Nor confirmed the fighting between the allied forces and supporters of the ousted Islamic Courts Union. He said the Islamic militants attacked this morning the positions of the joint forces in Kala-Beyr intersection, 17km northeast of Beledweyn where the rival sides exchanged heavy artillery weapons. Kala-Beyr is the main road connecting Hiran region to the other central regions.

Shiekh Muqtar Robow (Abu-mansoor), the spokesman of Al-shabaab, the Young Islamic Movement, has claimed that their forces attacked Ethiopian troops in Hiiraan province. Hiraan region events

Ethiopian army trucks were seen leaving the base and were reportedly heading west, towards the Somali-Ethiopian border. Since early 2007, the Ethiopian army maintained a 1,000-strong garrison in that base east of Beledweyn, the capital of the Hiraan region.

*2 Somali soldiers, 2 insurgents killedInsurgent fighters killed two police officers in a sneak attack, witnesses said. The officers were standing guard at a road in Mogadishu’s Hodan district when the suspected insurgents snuck up and shot them in the head. Fighting erupted in the area immediately after the fatal shooting, with government police engaging the insurgents directly. One insurgent was killed and a second one wounded in the gunfight with police. The intense fighting lasted for nearly one hour, forcing vital roads to be shut off in the process, traders said.

Also, insurgents attacked government troops near Mogadishu’s main Bakara market overnight. Government forces were able to kill one of the attackers, who were forced to flee into the night. Islamist forces peacefully retook the strategic city of Beletwein after after the Ethiopian garrison withdraws from the area. Some looting of government facilities occurred, but Islamist commanders called on locals to return stolen property and uphold the peace.

Elsewhere in central Somalia, battles erupt between al Shabaab and Ethiopian forces. Both sides were reported to be using heavy weapons, including artillery and rockets. The figthing was reported to be particularly heavy around the town of Guri El, which is where the Ethiopians had withdrawn to after vacating Beletwein.
