Brad Dye (born December 20, 1933, in Charleston, Mississippi) is a retired politician who served three 4-year terms as Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi (1980-1992).

Biography

In 1957, Dye received his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Mississippi at Oxford and two years later graduated from the university's law school.

In 1950, he worked as a page in the U.S. House of Representatives and also he worked for Paul B. Johnson, Jr. After graduation from law school, he practiced law in Grenada in northern Mississippi until 1961.

In 1960, he won a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives. When the legislature was not in session, he worked as an attorney for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, to which he had been elected by the Mississippi State Senate. He resigned from this post 1965 when he was appointed as a commissioner to the Workman's Compensation Commission. In 1968, he was appointed director of the Agricultural and Industrial Board by Governor John Bell Williams and served until 1971. He was elected state treasurer in 1971 and served from 1972-1976.

Dye served as president of the Jackson Savings and Loan Association from 1976-1979, when he was elected lieutenant governor. He was reelected in 1983 and 1987. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1980 and led the Mississippi delegation in 1984, when the party nominated Walter F. Mondale of Minnesota, whose candidacy was coolly received in Mississippi.

Personal life

Dye is married to the former Donna Bess Bailey of Coffeeville, and they have three sons. Hamp Dye is married to the former Mary Shannon Moore and has two children, Nathan and David. Ford Dye is married to Sonya and has son named Bradford Johnson Dye, "Jack" as they call him. Rick Dye, the third son, is married to the former Emily Taylor and has two daughters, Emma Kathryn and Margaret.
