Canal Cafe Theatre

The Canal Cafe Theatre is a 60-seater fringe theatre venue in Little Venice, London, located above the Bridge House pub. It was opened in 1984 as the the resident venue for NewsRevue, the Guinness World Record Holder for the longest running live comedy show.

The Theatre is primarily renowned for comedy (stand-up, sketch shows, comic plays/musicals), but is increasingly developing a reputation for new writing.

Location

The Canal Cafe Theatre is above the Bridge House Pub in Little Venice, on the corner of Westbourne Terrace Road and Delamere Terrace, at the meeting point of the Grand Union and Regents Canals. The closest tube stations are Warwick Avenue on the Bakerloo Line and Royal Oak on the Hammersmith and City Line. It is also only a few minutes walk to Paddington Station for the District and Circle lines, and national rail services.

History

The Theatre was founded as the residence for NewsRevue, and remains its home today, though the show is more famous for its annual transfer to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Other notable performers to have trodden the boards at the Canal Cafe include The League of Gentlemen, Daniel Kitson, The Consultants, Simon Day, Russell Howard, Eddie Izzard, 2008 if.comedy award nominee for Best Newcomer [http://www.pippaevans.com Pippa Evans] and "I'd Do Anything" finalist Sarah Lark.

Personnel

The Theatre has been under the tenure of current Artistic Director [http://www.emmataylor.org Emma Taylor] since 2001, and Theatre Managers since then have included Louis Brownhill, Fiona Pearson, and Hugh de la Bedoyere. The theatre is currently run by Hugh de la Bedoyere with Office Administrator Christopher Hale and Theatre Technician Damian Robertson.
