] Compiled by Percy Dearmer, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Martin Shaw, it was intended as a companion to the popular "English Hymnal" of 1911. Musically, it deliberately omitted several Victorian hymn tunes and substituted "modal" tunes by Shaw and Gustav Holst. [Grove Music]

During the twentieth century it was widely used in schools in the UK. [cite web
