Ecological Society of America

Ecological Society of America

The Ecological Society of America (ESA) is a professional society for ecologists located in the United States. It has about 9,000 members.

The society was formed at a meeting at Columbus Ohio, on December 28,1915, with the aims to:

* promote ecological science by improving communication among ecologists;
* raise the public's level of awareness of the importance of ecological science;
* increase the resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and
* ensure the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making by enhancing communication between the ecological community and policy-makers

The society publishes the journal "Ecology" from 1920, and Ecological Monographs, Ecological Applications, Frontiers in Ecology, Issues in Ecology, The Bulletin, and other publications. It holds an annual academic meeting of scientists, at different locations in the USA and Canada. While previously only technical, in the past decade it has made greater attempts to influence policy and reach the general public via its Public Affairs office and publications in non-technical language.
