Naval Leadership Weekend

For the past thirteen years Naval ROTC midshipmen from over around the country have gathered at the University of Notre Dame to learn about and discuss issues critical to their roles as future leaders in the United States Armed Services. This is usually a three and a half day event that provides an opportunity for midshipmen and cadets from all across the country to step outside their classrooms and into an environment that continues their education and training as leaders by promoting a critical examination of the principles of leadership. It is a chance for them to hear from notable leaders in both the military and civilian communities, providing them with the tools and information that will guide them to success beyond the realm of college.

Conference Agenda

Each year the conference focuses on ethics in the military and the role that junior officers play in maintaining the common core values of the armed services. The conference agenda includes addresses given by each guest speaker, and small group discussions on the issues and questions raised by the speakers.

History of Notre Dame and the Navy

The University of Notre Dame and the United States Navy share a history steeped in tradition. At the onset of World War II, the university lost much of its enrollement to young men joining the military. Like many colleges during the early years of the war, Notre Dame started to face severe financial difficulties. Fortunately for the University, the Navy selected Notre Dame as a training location for its officer candidates. From 1942 to 1946, over 10,000 Notre Dame students were commissioned as officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps as the Navy kept Notre Dame alive.
