Jackson is a town in Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,718 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Andrew Jackson.

The Town of Jackson is in the southeast part of the county. There are no significant communities in this town.

History

The town was formed from part of the town of Town of Cambridge.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.5 square miles (97.0 km²), of which, 37.2 square miles (96.2 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (0.83%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,718 people, 692 households, and 489 families residing in the town. The population density was 46.2 people per square mile (17.9/km²). There were 1,077 housing units at an average density of 29.0/sq mi (11.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.26% White, 0.81% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.11% of the population.

There were 692 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 23.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,490, and the median income for a family was $43,565. Males had a median income of $33,438 versus $21,290 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,473. About 5.3% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.7% of those under age 18 and 9.2% of those age 65 or over.
