India's Raj TV Coming To Malaysia

NEW DELHI, April 24 (Bernama) -- Chennai-based Raj Television Network, a leading Tamil language satellite broadcaster, will soon link up with Astro All Asia Networks plc (Astro) to air its programmes in Malaysia via direct-to-home platform.

Raj Television director M. Ravindran said the channel would go on air once both parties had ironed out the technical details and upon receiving Malaysian government's approval which was likely to be later this year.

Starting as a network in 1994 to provide family entertainment, the fast- growing regional broadcaster plans to enter the Malaysian market with the same concept, offering a genre of family entertainment programmes.

"Malaysia is the second biggest market after Chennai. We will be targeting the family segment because we have the best range of devotional and serials to offer. This will be our thrust and I think there is a big demand for that," Ravindran told Bernama from Chennai.

Raj TV, which boasts of having some of the best programmes from south India's entertainment industry, namely serials, talk shows, games, devotional programmes and news bulletins, is gearing to compete with other Indian channels that are on air in Malaysia.

Leading channels from the south such as Sun TV and Jaya TV, peppered with Indian entertainment, also available via Astro, are currently a hit among Malaysian viewers.

"Raj Network have six channels and we will select the best and give a bouquet of channels for Malaysian audience. Malaysia is an exciting market, not only the Indian audience, but there are also Malay and Chinese viewers," he said.
