John Ashworth

John Ashworth

Sir John Ashworth is a scientist and educationalist holding degrees in chemistry and biochemistry. He was given a knighthood for public services in the Queen's New Year Honours list 2008.

He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford and was made an Honorary Fellow in 1983. He received his PhD at Leicester University and worked there as a lecturer and reader before going on to take up the post of foundation Professor of Biology at the University of Essex in the 1970s.

John Ashworth was appointed under secretary to the government's Cabinet Office from 1979-81 where he acted as the chief scientific adviser to the government. He was the vice-chancellor at the University of Salford from 1981-1990, and was the director of the London School of Economics from 1990-96. He is also a former chairman of the British Library board 1996-2001, the Institute of Cancer Research and Barts and The London NHS Trust. He is a current governor of the Ditchley Foundation.
