Tina McIntyre is a fictional character on "Coronation Street", and was first seen onscreen on 7 January 2008. The character is played by 21-year old actress Michelle Keegan. Creation

Background

Tina McIntyre was first cast into the soap opera to portray the short-term girlfriend of character David Platt, to help change his evil ways. As the character's introduction and personality was portrayed onscreen, soap bosses and viewers were impressed with the character and actress Michelle Keegan which resulted into her character becoming a more permanent fixture. She has worked in low skilled jobs and currently works at a takeaway. Her main links in Coronation Street are with the Platt family.

Casting

Auditions were held for the part of the character and Michelle Keegan eventually received a call from her agent telling her she had been offered the part, the initial audtition being only her second for any part. In an interview with The Mirror, actress Michelle Keegan spoke upon her character's success and permanent duration on the show stating that: "Tina came in to the show just to change David into a nice character, and then to get to the point where he pushed his mum down the stairs. I was supposed to be out of there after that. But they’ve kept me on. They needed a bit of a ballsy character, I think. She’s moved into the Platts’ now and she’s getting a family base around her, so hopefully she’s around for the long haul. I didn’t think I was staying, so I’m very lucky". Describing Tina's personality after her arrival onscreen the official ITV website states: "Tina has never felt like she’s fitted in anywhere, but she’s not a pushover by any means. She thinks she knows everything, but doesn’t and would rather be friends with lads than girls, who usually hate her. Challenge her to an arm wrestle and she’ll probably win." Storylines

The character became the girlfriend of David Platt, and within a week of the relationship had sex with David at his house, resulting in Tina becoming pregnant. When David had Tina's name tattooed on his arm, she became very angry at him and stormed out.

The pregnancy was to be one of the character's first major storylines. After the weekend, she found out that she was pregnant, revealing all to David's mother, Gail. First shocked, Gail decided to talk to Tina about what she is going to do. She then suggested maybe an abortion might be best, when Tina agrees she asks her to keep it a secret from David and she will pay for her to have a private abortion, as the NHS would take up to three weeks. Tina went on to have an abortion, Gail went along with her for support. When Tina had the procedure, she turned down David's trip to see a band. After David eventually noticed something was not right about the way Tina was acting he ended their relationship.

When David eventually found out about the abortion, he pushed his mother down the stairs, leaving the scene quickly and fleeing to Tina's, making up with her while he was there. She later gave David an alibi when the police asked about David's whereabouts at the time of Gail's accident. Tina told them he was with her. Tina told David that she would help him if it went to court and had to commit Perjury. After David pushed Gail down the stairs, he convinced Tina to lie for him. When Gail's memory started returning, Tina started worrying under the pressure of lying and moved back to her own house. She also told David they were finished but David refused to give up. This hope eventually paid off as she decided to give him a second chance when she visited him in prison and sealed it with a kiss, despite the fact it was against the rules of the institution.

She was planning on visiting the jailbird with a picture of his gay grandfather, but her mother went to Gail's house and forbade her from seeing him. She is now living at the Platt's and had let her father meet David. The relationship soon began to crumble - David has begun to get suspicious of Tina and her emails, he soon hacked into her account and she was not happy, Tina packed her bags when she discovered that David had been reading her e-mails, then told her father to take her home. Tina got revenge on David by getting him fired from his salon job at Peter and Paul's. Tina continued to avoid David, but he had gig ticket and after experiencing a refusal from Tina offered Amber Kalirai, whom has often known to hold a crush on David, so Amber and David went out, Tina told Darryl Morton, one of David's mates, who's David had hacked into her account with, that she didn't care at all, but Darryl still thought she was secretly jealous. When Amber and David went on another date at his house, Tina confronted them and all was revealed to Amber that all David's game was to make Tina jealous. David and Tina later reconciled on 31 August.

Ian Wylie of Manchester Evening News spoke upon the fact that Michelle Keegan was nominated for 'Best newcomer' at The British Soap Awards 2008 and her portrayal of the character saying: "Coronation Street’s Michelle Keegan is nominated as Best Newcomer, fully deserved even after just a few months on screen" and "Teen rebel Tina McIntyre, played by Michelle, reminds many of a young Suranne Jones as Karen McDonald."
