History

The line traces its origin to the Tōnō (Eastern Mino) line, an 11.9 km, 768 mm gauge railway that opened in 1918. The segment from Shin-Tajimi to Hiromi Station was nationalized in 1929, and named the Taita Line. Extensions and upgrades took place from time to time, and in 1987, with the division of the Japan Railways into regional companies, the Taita Line became part of the Central Japan Railway Company.
