Langdon is a city in Cavalier County, North Dakota, in the United States. It is the county seat of Cavalier CountyGR|6. The population was 2,101 at the 2000 census. Langdon was incorporated in 1885 but was designated as the county seat in 1884.

Geography

Langdon is located at coor dms|48|45|42|N|98|22|18|W|city (48.761696, -98.371780)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²), of which, 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.72%) is water.

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,101 people, 917 households, and 565 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,233.1 people per square mile (477.2/km²). There were 1,178 housing units at an average density of 691.4/sq mi (267.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.57% White, 0.14% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population.

There were 917 households out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 36.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 28.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,839, and the median income for a family was $37,121. Males had a median income of $31,010 versus $19,342 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,670. About 4.9% of families and 8.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.3% of those under age 18 and 11.9% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Langdon's high school is like many other rural schools in North Dakota that have had name changes. The school was named "Langdon Area High School" (instead of just Langdon High School) after surrounding town's schools closed down. The mascot of Langdon Area High School is the Cardinal.
