French frigate Artémise (1794)

French frigate Artémise (1794)

The "Artémise" was a "Magicienne" class frigate of the French Navy.

She was under construction as "Aurore" in Toulon when the British seized the city, and was finished after it was retaken by the French on 24 July 1794. She was renamed "Artémise" in September.

On 23 June 1795, along with the 40-gun "Minerve", she took part in a combat against HMS "Dido" and HMS "Lowestoffe", escaping while "Minerve" was captured. Her captain was relieved of his command for leaving the "Minerve".

In 1798, she took part in the Expedition of Egypt, and in the Battle of the Nile. She was engaged by HMS "Orion" and HMS "Theseus", and was set on fire by her own crew to avoid being captured.
