"Fatal Move" (zh-ts|t=奪帥|s=夺帅) is a 2008 Hong Kong martial arts action crime film written, produced and directed by Dennis Law. The film features a large ensemble cast which includes Sammo Hung, Simon Yam and Wu Jing, who reunite after 2005's "". The film focuses on a Triad gang led by brothers Lin Ho-Lung and Lin Ho-Tung (Hung and Yam), which faces a series of double-crossings, and violent misfortunes. Danny Lee co-stars in the film, returning in his first feature film role after four years, once again playing a Hong Kong police officer.

Plot

The film opens with Lin Ho-Tung (Simon Yam) performing a mob hit inside a meat truck before attending his older brother's private party. Triad boss Lin Ho-Lung (Sammo Hung) is celebrating his son's first birthday, but the party, however, is interrupted when Police Inspector Liu Chi-Chung (Danny Lee) arrives outside of the club with his colleagues, warning the gang of throwing any parties without the police's consent.

As Liu and his colleagues keep an eye out on several of the gang’s major crime figures, Lung’s right-hand man and assassin, Tin-Hung (Wu Jing), takes on and brutally massacres a street gang. Lung’s wife Soso and fellow gang member Law Ting-Fat (Cheung Siu-Fai) meet up with Lung to discuss the flow of imported goods being shipped to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Tung spends dinner with loan sharks, with whom he owes a gambling debt. Lung eventually finds out about the debt, and confronts his brother.

Tung and Tin-Hung later meet up with Wu (Ken Lo) during a drugs shipment. The police later arrive at the scene. A gunfight ensues between both the police and triads, resulting in Wu’s arrest.

As Wu remains uncooperative with the police, his wife Tracy (Pinky Cheung) talks with Soso, threatening to have Wu expose Lung's gang, if she does not receive $20 million. Tung and Tin-Hung eventually torture Tracy, who reveals that the threat was bogus and that her secret lover coerced her into creating a lie so she could flee with him once she had gotten the money. The gang eventually executes Tracy’s lover, and, with the help of Liu Chi-Chung’s colleague Janet Liu (Maggie Siu), breaks into police headquarters to assassinate Wu. Various cops and triads are killed as a gunfight ensues with the Triads trying to escape the police precinct.

Soso and Fat are revealed to be scheming against Lung and his gang. They kidnap their financial backer, Uncle Yu (Hui Shiu-Hung). They later kill the kidnappers that they hired along with Yu, in hopes of financially disabling Lung and his gang. Yu's body is later discovered in a forest near a beach.

Lung and Tung eventually start a war killing various Triad gangs they suspect were responsible with the murder. Lung later has a meeting with his rival, Flirt (Tam Ping-Man) who reveals he had nothing to do with Yu’s death. Lung quickly realizes that he was blackmailed by Fat and Soso. As Liu Chi-Chung attempts to go after Lung's gang, Janet is arrested for aiding them.

Lung goes after Soso and Fat, resulting in a violent shootout. After Fat is eliminated, Lung catches up to Soso whom he refuses to kill, after she expresses her unhappiness working under Lung's wing. Soso is later arrested by the police.

Lung hides in an abandoned warehouse, where Tin-Hung challenges him to a fight. Lung kills Tin-Hung by impaling him with a pipe. Tin-Hung forgives him, hoping that his boss will soon join him after he dies. Refusing to surrender to the police and realizing his fate, Lung walks out of the warehouse armed with machine guns. He fires the weapons, and is shot to death by police.

As it ends, the film focuses on the fate of the remaining Triad members: As Soso is serving prison time, a masked woman attacks her by slitting her throat; Tung attempts to flee with his girlfriend. They spend a night out on the beach, when his girlfriend disappears. The ending is left ambiguous as the last shot of the film is a silencer being aimed at Tung.

Production

The film reunites writer-director Dennis Law, with initially the same crew he used to make the 2006 film "Fatal Contact".

Law originally wanted the film to be a sequel to "", which would focus on the Sammo Hung character for that film. Law then realized that the prequel/sequel idea had limited potential, especially when he wanted to show the relationship between the Sammo Hung and Wu Jing characters from "SPL". Though it has themes similar to "SPL", and reunites Wu Jing and Sammo Hung, Law’s "Fatal Move" is a completely original work. For his film, Law wanted to set his sights on North American audiences, by assembling a cast of familiar actors that are best known to them, such as Sammo Hung, Ken Lo, Simon Yam and Danny Lee.

Law believes that the martial arts scenes are the strongest asset of "Fatal Move", in particular, the major weapon fight scene between Sammo Hung and Wu Jing. [ [http://www.wu-jing.org/happenings/plugin/tag/ken+lo/ Wu-Jing.org] ]

Category III Rating

The film was awarded a Category III rating for its execessive amount of violence. The film was not given a release in Mainland China, since Law refused to compromise by editing a tamer version that conforms to their strict censorship.
