Features

The game contains 74 songs, 24 initially available and 50 that need to be unlocked, either through normal play or purchasing the songs with Dance Points accumulated through Dance Master Mode. The majority of the songs are Konami originals, most of which are composed by Naoki Maeda. This mix introduces several licensed tracks to DDR as well as reusing veteran songs, such as Smile.dk's "Butterfly (Upswing Mix)", letting the highly popular European group finally appear on a DDR U.S. home version.

For the first time in any U.S. DDR, a song by E-Rotic was included, specifically In the Heat of the Night. Konami had previously been reluctant to release songs by the German pop group, known for its sexually explicit lyrics, on United States versions of Dance Dance Revolution. Seven songs from the group, including the aforementioned, had been released on Japanese versions of DDR previously. The particular song chosen is relatively tame. Largely due to the inclusion of E-Rotic and the other sexually explicit themes throughout the game, DDR EXTREME 2 is rated Everyone 10+ by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, with the billets for Mild Lyrics and Suggestive Themes.

INJECTION OF LOVE (HINA MIX) was also edited to exclude its original lyrics, which are sexually explicit in nature.

Due to the outcry over the elimination of the Song Wheel interface in the US version of DDR EXTREME, it has been restored in DDR EXTREME 2. The Groove Radar feature has also reappeared. New advance modes available, the EyeToy digital camera peripheral is used only for "hands and feet" and "watch me dance" modes. In addition, for the first time in PlayStation DDR games, online gameplay is available.

Other versions

There was speculation that Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2 might also be released in other regions along with the North American version making it a global release. In the past there has always been slight differences between regions. Konami teased that the online play feature would be "global" on the months leading up to Extreme 2's release. On September 6, 2005 Konami announced Dance Dance Revolution Strike as the new Japanese version of Dance Dance Revolution. They confirmed it would use the same engine as Extreme 2 but contain a different soundtrack. A European version was later announced as Dancing Stage Max, again using the same game engine but containing different music. All three versions of the game had online play at the time of their release but Konami has since shut the servers.

Online play

The online features of DDR EXTREME 2 were available exclusively to players who used a broadband connection to access online gaming functions of the PlayStation 2. Players who used an analog modem were unable to play the game online.

Online services for DDR EXTREME 2 ended on September 12, 2006. Presumably, this may be because the next title, Dance Dance Revolution SuperNova, contains online play.
