Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy (Санкт-Петербургская Государственная Педиатрическая Медицинская Академия) is one of the oldest educational institutions in Russia, situated in the city of Saint Petersburg. The Academy was founded in 1925.

St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy (SPbSPMA), formerly known as Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute (LPMI), founded in 1925 as the Institute for Protection of Mothers and Children - one of the leading schools of higher medical Russia and pediatric oldest independent university in the world. The clinic is the heir SPbSPMA City Children's Hospital "In memory of their holy coronation Imperial Majesty". She began to receive patients on May 25, 1905. The main emergence agencies have passed under the leadership of an outstanding organizer Julia Aronovny Mendeleevoy, led by the Institute from 1925 to 1949. During the Great Patriotic War (World War I and II) Institute does not cease its activities. Here were treated sick and exhausted children, was opened hospital for the sick and wounded soldiers, continued research has been training doctors.

In the postwar years directing the Institute: prof.N.T.Shutova (1950-1960); Associate Professor E. P. Semenova (1969-1965); prfessora GA Kaysaryants (1965-1975); GA Timofeev (1975 -1984); VP Alferov (1984-1991); MV Nezhentsev (1991-1999); Guzeva VI (1999); since 1999 - VV Levanovich.

Currently, the Academy are three full faculties: General Medicine, Pediatric and Clinical Psychology Faculty. In 2005, obtained a license to open a vocational education program, specializing in Dentistry. There is a preparatory department and faculty training and vocational retraining.

Education is conducted both in Russian and in English. SPbSPMA recognized the World Health Organization and included in the World List of Medical Schools WHO already in 1965.The Academy has a high status among pediatric medical schools. SPbSPMA offers diploma and postgraduate training, further training of doctors and teachers, postgraduate training in various specialties, training opportunities in graduate school, and seek doctoral degrees.

For more than 80 years of the Academy in its walls labored prominent doctors and scientists. Education department of pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine and continues 6 years. The first three years of training, students spend studying mainly humanitarian, science, biomedical and health-preventive discipline. The program includes all items required for any Russian higher medical school. In doing so, special attention ontogenetic features.

The training at the Academy already in the first courses, students have access to patients, practiced integrated interdisciplinary approach to studying the fundamental disciplines and interpenetration of theoretical and clinical subjects.

In addition to using the most advanced methods and technology students learn classical techniques for manipulating real objects: samples of tissues for histological research, preparation for the corpses and refine surgical skills in the course of normal anatomy and operative surgery, laboratory animals for experiments in the course pathological physiology, pharmacology, etc.Academy Library has 700000 volumes and has reading rooms. In the main complex of buildings Academy 20 educational, clinical and administrative buildings over an area of 60000 m '.

Students in the third course (year three)beginning to explore introductory courses internal diseases, surgery and pediatrics. In addition to general diagnosis and semiotics, the basic skills of the doctor, much attention is paid to the peculiarities of development, nutrition and behavior of healthy children.Successfully ending of year three the student assumes the qualification; student nurses (honey brother) after passing a summer production practices.

Students in the fourth year of training undergo advanced training in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics and child surgery, infectious disease of adults and children, and other disciplines. At fourth and fifth courses students involved in practical training in clinical disciplines leading health institutions in the city and region.

Children's Hospital Academy of the largest in Russia and is also used as the primary clinical base in the classroom for pediatric disciplines. At fourth and fifth courses students are studying typical cases within the Faculty courses internal diseases, surgery and pediatrics, with emphasis on the etiology, diagnosis and pathogenesis. In total, these courses are provided for 72 weeks 9 weeks of classes and examinations.

After fourth training at the Academy and 6-week summer practice paramedical students receive qualified paramedic, and after the fifth year students spend 4 weeks of summer practice as subordinator. The entire sixth year of study devoted to an in-depth study of hospital rate of internal diseases, surgery and pediatrics. We study the individual characteristics and the most important diseases through a combination of clinical review specific patients, the future doctor practised in the differential diagnosis of diseases and to pay particular attention to prevention and treatment.

Sixth course includes 37 weeks of classes and 3 weeks gosekzamenov. Final certification of State conducted a special State Commission under the Russian federal standards and norms for medical universities. Academy graduates also have the opportunity to continue training in clinical internship or residency for selected professions and get into graduate school at the department of theoretical profile.

Currently SPbSPMA trained more than 3000 students. Academy graduates receive comprehensive health education to work as general practitioners, medical specialists, including pediatricians, and in the field of experimental medicine term.Approximately 60% of graduates working in various areas of Pediatrics, the remaining 40% work in "adult" or engage in experimental medicine research and other types of medical activity. The Academy conducts extensive research work. The main attention is focused on the normal development of the organism and pathology in age aspect. Academy students also participate in research developments in the research work of students "NIRS" in student and academic societies "PDL"

Many children's doctors former USSR - graduates (Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute(LPMI) - SPbSPMA, many doctors of other specialties also withdrew from the walls of the Academy. Also for many decades Academy is an international center of higher medical education. Over the past half century it has graduated several thousand foreign students from 70 countries from 4 continents. Currently, there are trained studios from over 50 countries. In SPbSPMA person can be taken either sex, nation and race, regardless of political and religious beliefs of any State, having diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation.To provide the necessary income certificate (diploma) on the average full-secondary special education. For foreigners there is a special annual preparatory department where the Russian language is taught, as well as the introduction course in biology, chemistry and physics.

When an applicant (applicant) must stand the test in three subjects: Russian language, biology, chemistry.

The Academy has 4 dormitories. One of them - the type flats. In the dormitories there are local libraries, kitchens, bars and cafes, classrooms, reading and sports halls, etc. All graduates of the Academy have equal rights in relation to the recognition of their diplomas in all countries, WHO equal footing with graduates of other Russian medical schools. Academy graduates licensed for medical practice in Russia and outside it and are currently engaged in medical practice in different areas of medical activities in over 70 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America and Australia and even in Antarctica. Several thousand doctors - Academy graduates practicing in Arab countries, Israel, Canada, the U.S. and other countries, maintaining relations with SPbSPMA.
