The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant

The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant

The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant is a 1954 novel by Douglass Wallop. It is the story of Joe Boyd and his encounter with the devil, Mr. Applegate, and how he was turned into Joe Hardy to help the Washington Senators beat the New York Yankees. When Joe wants to go back to his family, Applegate engages Lola to lure him away from his wife.

It was later adapted into the musical "Damn Yankees" with a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop and music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. It starred Stephen Douglass as Joe Hardy and Gwen Verdon as Lola and was later adapted into a movie with Tab Hunter in the role of Joe.
