David Carabott (born 18 May 1968 in Marsaxlokk, Malta) is a former professional footballer who played for many teams in Malta, where he used to play as a defender.

During his career, Carabott has played for Hibernians, Valletta, Marsaxlokk, Msida St. Joseph and Sliema Wanderers in the Maltese Premier League, Balzan Youths in the Maltese First Division and Għajnsielem of the Gozo Football League.

Carabott has also been capped 122 times for and scored 12 goals for Malta, which to date makes him the country's most capped player.

Playing career

Hibernians

David Carabott was a product of Birzebbuga St Peter's and his senior career started as a winger with Marsaxlokk in Maltese Third Division.

He moved to Hibernians in 1987 and established himself as a key player, primarily on the right flank. Later in his career he was successfully switched to right-back at both club and international level.

During his time with the club he made 221 appearances and scored 57 times, and won the Maltese Premier League twice in the 1993–94 and 1994–95 seasons.

Valletta

During the 2000-01 season, Carabott moved to capital club Valletta and was part of the squad that won six trophies in a season.

He made a total of 63 appearances and scored six times for the club, during a three year stint, he also added to his Maltese Premier League title wins, with another triumph during the 2000-01 season.

Marsaxlokk

In 2003-04, David Carabott returned to Marsaxlokk after a sixteen year absence. and made twenty appearances scoring one goal in his first season, and finished the season with a runners up medel in the clubs first ever Maltese Cup final, the club lost the final to Sliema Wanderers.

The following season Carabott only played briefly for Marsaxlokk, making six appearances and scoring two goals, and finished the season on loan with Gozo Football League club Għajnsielem.

Msida St. Joseph

David Carabott left Marsaxlokk at the end of the 2004-05 season, and joined fellow Maltese Premier League side Msida St. Joseph, although the move was short lived, with Carabott making just ten appearances and scoring one goal, before been released in December 2005.

Sliema Wanderers

Next for Carabott was a move to Sliema Wanderers where he regained the form he showed earlier in his career and found himself a regular feature in the Sliema Wanderers first team squad.

During David's first season (the second half of the 2004-05 season) with Sliema Wanderers he notched up nine appearance, but failed to find the net during this time, although the move proved a success as Carabott was a member of the Maltese Premier League winning team.

For the 2005-06 Carabott continued to be a regular in the Sliema Wanderers team. Carabott made 19 appearances, but again failed to score during this time, and with age not on his side, Carabott was released at the end of the season.

Għajnsielem

For the 2007-08 season, Carabott returned to Għajnsielem in the Gozo Football League in Gozo, he played a few games for the club, before leaving and retiring from the game.

Balzan Youths

David was offered the position of player-coach for Maltese First Division side Balzan Youths for the 2009–10 season, He joined manager Ivan Zammit and helped the newly promoted side achieve an impressive domestic campaign. Carabott picked up a handful of games in spite of his age.

Marsaxlokk

Carabott decided to move back to his hometown club, Marsaxlokk in January 2010, for his third spell with the club. He took up a similar role of player-coach with the club, he remained with the club until the end of 2009–10, before retiring as a player.

International career

Malta

David Carabott made his international debut for Malta, whilst playing for Hibernians on 15 November 1987 against Switzerland in a qualifying game for 1988 European Football Championship in a match that finished 1-1.

Carabott made 122 appearances and scored 12 goals for Malta, his first goal came just over one year after his debut during his 12th game on 23 November 1988 in a Friendly game against Cyprus the game again ending in a 1-1 draw.
