The titles for "Frontier in Space" were prepared, like "Carnival of Monsters" with a new arrangement of the theme music performed by Paddy Kingsland on a synthesizer. Known as the "Delaware" arrangement (the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was based on Delaware Road), it proved unpopular with BBC executives, so the original Delia Derbyshire theme was restored, although an early edit of episode 5 still contains the "Delaware" music.

Continuity

*The last episode ends on a cliffhanger, with the Doctor seriously injured and sending a message about the Daleks to the Time Lords via the TARDIS's telepathic circuits. This scene was directed by David Maloney, who directed the following serial, "Planet of the Daleks", which continues the story.
*The monsters that Jo hallucinates when the hypnosound is used on her in episode six are, respectively, a Drashig from "Carnival of Monsters", a Mutt from "The Mutants" and a Sea Devil from "The Sea Devils".
*In episode one Jo mentions Solos, a reference to "The Mutants".
*In episode four, the Doctor describes the details of his trial by the Time Lords at the end of "The War Games" to Jo.
*When the Master is dying in the Tenth Doctor story The Last of the Time Lords the Doctor tries to keep him alive, reminding him of their adventure with the Daleks from this story.

Outside references

At one point, the Master is seen reading "The War of the Worlds" by H. G. Wells.

Television critics have observed that the precipitating incident of the first Earth-Draconia war, as depicted in this story, is very similar to the beginning of the Earth-Minbari War in the 1990s television series "Babylon 5". A novelisation of this serial, written by Malcolm Hulke, was published by Target Books in September 1976 under the title "Doctor Who and the Space War". This was the last time Target would give a novelisation a substantially different title than that of the serial on which it was based. An unabridged reading of the novelisation by actor Geoffrey Beevers was released on CD in February 2008 by BBC Audiobooks.

Broadcast,VHS & DVD release

*The feature compilation version seen frequently in the USA in the 1980s and 1990s ended prematurely, when the Master revealed his "allies" to be the Daleks.
*The story was released on VHS in August 1995. Episode 5 uses the "Delaware" music mentioned above.
*The final episode of this story was also issued on "The Pertwee Years" VHS release, along with the final episodes of both "Inferno" and "The Dæmons"
*A commentary for a future DVD release has been recorded.
