Brady Lake is a village in Portage County, Ohio, United States. The population was 513 at the 2000 census and 497 in the 2006 estimate. Geography

Brady Lake is located at coor dms|41|9|48|N|81|18|46|W|city (41.163329, -81.312803)GR|1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²), of which, 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (26.19%) is water.

The village is situated along the southern and eastern shores of Brady Lake.

Nearby communities

Located in west-central Portage County, Brady Lake only physically borders Franklin Township, which completely surrounds the village. There are, however, several other nearby municipalities and townships including:

*Ravenna Township to the east
*Ravenna to the east
*Brimfield Township to the south
*Streetsboro to the north

Transportation

Ohio State Route 59 skirts the southern edge of Brady Lake for a short distance just east of the Kent city limits. It, along with Brady Lake Road along the north side of the village, are the main roads connecting Brady Lake with Kent and Ravenna. For public transportation, it is served by the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority (PARTA).

Although Brady Lake has its own post office and ZIP code (Brady Lake, OH 44211), it is only used for P.O. Box addresses. Part of the village is in the Ravenna, OH 44266 ZIP code while the other part uses the Kent, OH 44240 ZIP code for home-delivered mail.

For telephone use, Brady Lake is part of the 330 and 234 area codes, which includes the Akron-Canton and Youngstown areas of Northeast Ohio.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 513 people, 202 households, and 148 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,625.6 people per square mile (619.0/km²). There were 212 housing units at an average density of 671.8/sq mi (255.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.49% White, 1.56% African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.58% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.78% of the population.

There were 202 households out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $36,406, and the median income for a family was $47,917. Males had a median income of $36,667 versus $26,641 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,357. About 3.5% of families and 3.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.5% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Brady Lake is part of the Kent City School District, which it has been a part of since 1959. After merging with the Kent City Schools, this school was renamed Emma Willard School and functioned as an elementary school until it was closed in 1978. For higher education, Brady Lake is located just east of the campus of Kent State University and is in close proximity to Hiram College, the University of Akron and the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Culture

Prior to 2007, the town celebrated a festival called Captain Brady Day each summer.
