Green is an affluent suburban city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 22,817 at the 2000 census. It is located almost exactly midway between the cities of Akron and Canton, although it is technically part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Green was incorporated in 1991 as a municipality. Prior to incorporation, Green was a township with several unincorporated hamlets, most notably Greensburg. A section of the township became the village of Green and later merged with the rest of the township. Fred Ravagnani was the first "Mayor" of Green village. What is today Green was originally part of Stark County, although Green has been situated wholly within the County of Summit since 1840.

The fairly recent incorporation of the city results in the city having no unique postal service ZIP code; it is served by its own original Post Office, Greensburg, OH 44232, but this is a P.O. Box only office. No street addresses in Green have this ZIP code. Green street addresses are served by 5 different post offices, covering different parts of the city:

2 Akron post offices (ZIP codes 44312, 44319),1 North Canton post office (44720),the Clinton, OH (44216) post office, and the Uniontown, OH post office (44685).

Another unusual aspect of Green is it contracts with the Summit County Sheriff's Office for police service.

Incorporation

The incorporation of Green was done for one reason only: to prevent another municipality from annexing it. Particularly, residents were concerned that Green would be annexed away in pieces. The citizens of Green wanted to remain whole and continue to have the same boundaries that Green Township had. The incorporation had nothing to do with the school system since residents understood that the city and school system were two separate political entities and neither was contingent on the other.
