progressive rock song by Genesis, from their 1981 albumAbacab . It was written by keyboardist Tony Banks. Unlike the vast majority of the songs that came before this, its style is dramatic and artsy, reminiscent of their material from the '70's. Even so, the song has a greater complexity, which includes an innumerably wider array of synthesizers, a more effects-driven sound to Rutherford's guitars, and the more aggressive sound of Collins' vocals and 'gated' drums. The lyrical content is also identifiable as one of woe:“ Me and Sarah Jane,We had it coming,All the pain,Walking down the streets,And finding nothing is the same,And now the city lights are dimming one by one,It costs too much money to keep them all on. ”
In an interview, Banks described it as one of his many "terminal songs"--i.e. Banks-written songs whose lyrics include apocalyptic themes. [Banks, Tony et al: "Genesis Chapter and Verse".] Other examples include
Watcher of the Skies , Domino andFading Lights .This song was also included on the second side of their 1982 live album
Three Sides Live .References
