Walters is a city in Cotton County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,657 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cotton CountyGR|6.

Geography

Walters is located at coor dms|34|21|23|N|98|18|57|W|city (34.356353, -98.315773)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.4 square miles (21.7 km²), of which, 8.1 square miles (21.1 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (2.75%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,657 people, 1,063 households, and 721 families residing in the city. The population density was 326.6 people per square mile (126.2/km²). There were 1,256 housing units at an average density of 154.4/sq mi (59.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.38% White, 0.38% African American, 10.24% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 1.02% from other races, and 3.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.42% of the population.

There were 1,063 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,771, and the median income for a family was $31,532. Males had a median income of $27,578 versus $18,669 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,398. About 15.9% of families and 19.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.4% of those under age 18 and 17.9% of those age 65 or over.

Entertainment

Every summer, usually in July, Walters is host to the Comanche Tribe Pow-Wow, Local Rodeo, and Car Cruz.
