Thomas St. George McCarthy

Thomas St. George McCarthy

Thomas St. George McCarthy was an Irish Rugby International and was also present at the founding meeting of the Gaelic Athletic Association at Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland in 1884 [cite web |url=http://www.gaa.ie/page/the_birth_of_cumann_luthcleas_gael.html |title= The Birth of the GAA|accessdate=2008-04-07] . He was at the time of founding of the GAA a District Inspector of the Royal Irish Constabulary based at Templemore, County Tipperary which is not far from Thurles.

This is notable because later there would be a ban for many years in the GAA on people who played rugby and soccer joining the Association and also a ban on members of the British police and armed forces from joining.

The McCarthy cup is named in his honour and is competed for by member of the Garda Síochána and the Police Service of Northern Ireland [cite web |url= http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/6160200.stm|title=PSNI GAA team in first Gardaí win |accessdate=2008-04-07]
