Food Freedom Day

Food Freedom Day

Food Freedom Day is the calendar date representing when Canadians earned enough income to pay the grocery bill for the entire year.

In 2008, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture calculated that it took 34 days (Feb. 3, 2008) for the average Ontario family to make enough to cover their food expenses for the year.

Canadian consumers spend on average 10.5 percent of their personal disposable income (PDI) on food expenditures. In many parts of the world, the cost of food is significantly higher.

Food Freedom Day is designed to raise awareness of the sacrifices and contributions made by Canadian farmers in providing consumers with one of the safest and most affordable food supplies in the world.
