Marquette Student Media has 6 outlets:

  • MUTV, the student-run television station
  • MUR, the student-run radio station
  • Marquette Tribune, the student-produced newspaper
  • Marquette Journal, the student-produced magazine
  • Student Media Advertising, a student-run advertising agency
  • Student Media Interactive, a student-run web development agency

History

Marquette University Student Media traces its roots back to 1916, when the Marquette Tribune, the student-produced newspaper, was first published. Since then, 5 additional outlets have opened: MUR in the 1960s, MUTV in 1976, the Marquette Journal, Student Media Ads, and Student Media Interactive

They have produced publications in both CMYK and black and white.

Staff

Each outlet of Marquette Student Media is headed by a student. The College of Communication posts applications and hold interviews at the end of each academic year, during the which the directors of the outlets are selected for the next academic year.

Current Staff

The department heads for the current academic year are as follows:

Outlet Director
MUTV Sam Bringardner & Chris Visser
Marquette Radio Justice Shorter & Andy Boyd
Marquette Journal Patrick Johnson & Brooke McEwen
Marquette Tribune Jeff Engel & Derrick Chengery
Student Media Ads Lauren Frey
Student Media Interactive Patty Marra

For a list of past directors, see the individual outlet pages.

Location

Marquette Student Media is based in Robert A. Johnston Hall, home of the Diederich College of Communications. At present, each outlet has his own office:

  • MUTV's office is on the 4th floor of Johnston Hall, but all production occurs in the television studios on the second floor
  • MUR's office is on the 4th floor of Johnston Hall, and all broadcasts occur it the studio adjacent to the office.
  • The Tribune is based in the basement of Johnston Hall
  • The Journal is based in the basement of Johnston Hall
  • Student Media Advertising is based in the basement of Johnston Hall
  • Student Media Interactive is based in the basement of Johnston Hall

Covergence

In 2006, the College began executing plans to converge all outlets of Student Media into a single location, instead of being spread out all over the building. The basement of Johnston Hall was chosen as the location, and therefore was partially remodeled during the Summer of 2008.

When Dr. John Pauly, formerly Dean of the College of Communication, was promoted to the position of University provost in April 2008, convergence plans came to a halt. The broadcasting outlets of Marquette Student Media (MUTV and MUR) did not move to the basement of Johnston Hall as originally intended. However, other plans of convergence continued, namely the addition of 2 conference rooms, the relocation of an unused computer lab, and the relocation of the Student Media Business office.

Current plans are to continue the remodeling of Johnston Hall's basement during Summer 2009.
