Howie Rose

Howie Rose

Howard Rose (born 1954) is an American sportscaster with the New York Mets and the New York Islanders for WFAN and MSG Plus.

Rose was born in Brooklyn and grew up a Mets and Rangers fan. He graduated from Queens College in 1975. [ [http://msg.com/ourteam_hrose.jsp Howie Rose] , MSG Network. Accessed September 20, 2007. "A graduate of Queens College, Rose’s career began in 1975 when he became one of the original voices for SportsPhone."] He also attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queens. He is known for his signature phrase of "Put it in the books!" after a Mets victory. He worked the television booth until the retirement of long-time Mets radio voice Bob Murphy. Rose took Murphy's spot alongside Gary Cohen on WFAN. Cohen became the play-by-play broadcaster on new Mets network SportsNet New York for the by|2006 season, and Rose shared the radio booth with partner Tom McCarthy and producer/engineer Chris Majkowski. In 2008, Wayne Hagin replaced McCarthy.

Rose started his career doing sports updates on NY City based SPORTSPHONE (owned by Phone Programs) in the mid '70s.

Rose, who has done Mets play-by-play on radio or television since 1995, utters his catch phrase, "Put it in the books" after a Mets victory; when he uses the phrasing "and the Mets are leading by a score of __ to __" he uses the same diction as original Mets 'caster Lindsey Nelson. He previously hosted the "Mets Extra" pre- and post-game shows.

Rose is also the play-by-play announcer for Islanders telecasts where he now works alongside Billy Jaffe and ice-level reporter Deb Placey. Rose replaced Jiggs McDonald on Islanders broadcasts in 1995 and was previously partnered with Ed Westfall and Joe Micheletti. Prior to the Islanders, Rose worked as a play-by-play radio announcer for the New York Rangers, and was paired mainly with Sal Messina. He is most recognized by Rangers fans for his call of "Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!" made when Stephane Matteau scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime of Game Seven of the 1994 NHL Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils. Rose occasionally worked games for FOX NHL Saturday in the mid-90s, and was a regional replacement announcer for FOX Saturday Baseball in 2008, when many of their national announcers had switched over to football.

Rose was also the original prime-time host on WFAN when the station went all-sports in 1987. He hosted the program until 1995.
