First known as the CAS (Center for the Arts and Sciences), the school's initial half-day program intended to draw kids from inside and outside the district. Whether it be music, dance, or writing, the school was designed to hone those skills. In the late 1990's, parents rallied for a full-day program to extend the rigor of the school's programs to include honors-level instruction in all subjects.

The SASA student body is extremely diverse. There are students from both working class and wealthy families, and the school's racial makeup is also very mixed. SASA draws students from both the East and West sides of Saginaw city (traditionally the province of Saginaw High School and Arthur Hill High School, respectively), as well as outlying suburbs, and the cities of Bay City and Midland to name only a few.

The school's athletics programs are small in scope, but have grown in recent years to affiliate its high school teams with the Inter-State Athletic Conference/ISAC for varsity boys and girls sports in basketball and soccer and girls volleyball. For some major sports (including football, and baseball) students elect to attend SASA for the half-day program and play on their home school's team.

SASA has also taken 1st place at the local MathCounts competition for middle schoolers the past 12 years. First placers in locals have also been from SASA. The mathcounts team is coached by Mr. Michael Aide, and for the past two years Nicholas Triantafillou assisted. Last year, SASA sent five students to the state competition. As well as MathCounts, SASA middle and high school compete in several other math and science competitions annually.

SASA was the recipient of the Michigan Governor's Arts Award for Excellence in Education for 2006-7, and in 2007 the school received the U.S. News and World Report's Bronze Award in its "America's Best High Schools" review. ArtServe MI recognized SASA for exellence in the arts in 2006 by nominating the school for the National "Kennedy Center Creative Ticket" award as Michigan's educational keystone program.
