Whistler Sliding Centre

The Whistler Sliding Centre is a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track located in Whistler, British Columbia, located 125 km north of Vancouver. Located on Whistler Mountain, this venue will host the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton competitions for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

History

Awarding and construction

In 2003, Vancouver was chosen for the 2010 Winter Olympics over Pyongchang, South Korea and Salzburg, Austria. First testing and homologation

The first run took place on December 19, 2007 with Canadian bobsledder Pierre Lueders and his brakeman Justin Kripps starting at the Junior Start house, located 520 meters down the 1450 meter track. VANOC, the Olympic Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Olympics, will review the recommendations made from both the FIBT and the FIL in order to fine tune the track. Track technical details

It will seat 11,650 during the 2010 games. 350 track footings were used to set the track on its proper foundation. 40% of those footings were complete by July 2006. There are over 100 km (62.1 miles) of ammonia refrigeration piping used to keep the track frozen. The track also includes a control tower and administration buildings. Sloping and curves were contoured to within 1 to 3 mm (0.04 to 0.12 inches) of the planned design course. Ice thickness is 2 to 5 cm maintained by hand. Additionally, the track had 36 on-track video cameras and 42 "timing eyes".

Track g-forces are expected to reach up to 5.02 for men's singles luge. Maximum speed was reached at 147.9 km/h (91.9 mph) in four-man bobsleigh during the homologation process.
