Pleasant Gap is a census-designated place (CDP) in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,611 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Pleasant Gap is located at coord|40|52|1|N|77|44|37|W|region:US_type:city|display=inline (40.866926, -77.743539)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,611 people, 724 households, and 469 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,020.1 people per square mile (393.7/km²). There were 749 housing units at an average density of 474.3/sq mi (183.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.63% White, 0.25% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.56% of the population.

There were 724 households out of which 25.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.75.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $43,797, and the median income for a family was $47,132. Males had a median income of $31,304 versus $22,820 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,747. About 6.7% of families and 10.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.1% of those under age 18 and 8.4% of those age 65 or over.
