Jared Ilovar

Jared Ilovar

Jared Ilovar was an intern for the State of Ohio, working for the Office of Management and Budget. It was standard practice for one of the two backup tapes to be taken home by an intern each night (despite instructions from six years earlier which mandated that a network administrator should be the one to take the tape home each night). One June evening, 2007, when Jared had taken a tape home, his car was broken into and the tape (amongst other things in his car) was stolen. The tape contained names and Social Security numbers for all then-current Ohio state employees. Jared was fired by then Governor Ted Strickland after he refused to resign. "For the record I was never involved in the theft of the tape and the investigators came to the same conclusion," he said. "I was a victim of a random car theft, and now I am the scapegoat for the state of Ohio." . . . "I wasn't aware that I was making any mistakes," said Mr. Ilovar. "Given the fact that I took the tapes out of the building every night and brought them back every day, how was that making a mistake? Remember my instructions from a fellow intern were 'bring these [tapes] back tomorrow.'"
