The Breast Cancer Research Foundation

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder, vice chairman of The Estee Lauder Companies. Lauder's first foray into breast cancer awareness was through an initiative by herself and Aleandra Penney, former editor of SELF magazine, to make the pink ribbon an international symbol of breast cancer awareness.

BCRF is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding clinical and genetic research. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over $200 million to support clinical and genetic research at universities and academic medical centers worldwide conducting promising breast cancer research. BCRF is funding 151 scientists across the United States and in Canada, Latin America, the Middle East, and throughout Europe.

Mission

The mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and genetic research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health.

Accolades

BCRF directs at least 85 cents of every dollar raised directly to research and awareness programs. In 2007, the Foundation’s administrative costs were less than 9% of revenues. The Foundation has received Charity Navigator’s highest rating, four stars. BCRF is the only breast cancer organization in the U.S. to receive this rating for six consecutive years.. In addition, the Foundation received an “A+” rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy and was named one of America’s top eight charities by "Money" magazine.
