Geography

Boiling Springs is located at coor dms|40|9|25|N|77|7|57|W|city (40.156884, -77.132609)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²), of which, 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²) of it is land and 0.40% is water.

Boiling Springs gets its name from the prominent natural artesian well springs, known locally as "the bubble," located in and around the town. The local high school adopted these springs as a unique mascot, the "Bubblers." Another story of the name comes from how the lake in the center of the town steams (as if boiling) in the winter time. This is because the water in the lake stays at a constant 52 degrees Fahrenheit year round, and the air around it is at a lower temperature. The town's situation on the Appalachian Trail is perhaps its most notable geographic feature otherwise.

Boiling Springs was settled prior to 1737. An iron forge in the center of the town produced cannon for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The village also played a prominent role in the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War. Around the turn of the century, Boiling Springs became a tourist destination with a small zoo and a swimming pool that grew with time to three waterslides, and four pools.

The town remains quaint and picturesque to this day. The Appalachian Trail runs through the center of town and one of the ATs regional offices is located in the center of town. Fly fishing in the Yellow Breeches Creek also draws people to the village. Foundry Day, celebrated the first Saturday in June, is a craft show.

"The Bubble"

This beautiful body of water was formed by blocking the brook fed from 30 natural springs. This stream of clear water literally bubbles like boiling water at a year-round temperature of 52 degrees to the surface (hence the name)-- from caverns that are guessed to be almost 2000 feet below the surfaceFact|date=August 2008.
