Guangzhou University (GU) is a state university in Guangzhou, China.

Campuses

Approved by the Ministry of Education, Guangzhou University (GU), was founded as a multi-disciplinary university on July11, 2000 by merging the tertiary educational institutions previously known as Guangzhou Normal University, South China Institute of Construction, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Junior Teachers' College, and Guangzhou Institute of Education.Once located in the vicinity of the Guangzhou Sculpture Park(广州雕塑公园) and Luhu Park(麓湖公园), Guangzhou University has been and being easily accessed by all modes of transportation and situated in a picturesque environment. The University had covered a total floor area of 486,000 square meters with a building area of 436,000 square meters in its five campuses situated respectively in Guangyuan , Guihuagang, Luhu, Qiyi Lu and Longdong. Currently, the 2.1 billion dollar new campus, as large as 1,975 mu (1.32 km²), is available to all students in Guangzhou University. Its well-stocked library has a total collection of 1,960,000 books.

Courses

While the undergraduate programs remain a dominant focus of its operation, GU is actively committed to consolidating and expanding its postgraduate programs. It is also developing its vocational and technical higher education programmes. The University comprises 20 schools.

The university is currently authorized to run 17 postgraduate programs and 62 undergraduate programs under eight fields of study including Literature, Science, Engineering, Economics, Management, Law, Education and History.

Staff and students

As a university of a considerable size, GU has a total staff of 2,588 including one academic of the Chinese Academy of Science, one academic of the China Institute of Engineering, four academics employed on part-time basis, 20 supervisors of doctoral students, 130 full-time professors, 567 associate professors; of whom 100 are Ph.D holders, 32 who have been awarded the state Council Special Allowances, 14 provincial and municipal level experts. The University's current fulltime postgraduates, undergraduates and diploma students number 17,000. The University enrols students mainly from Guangdong Province and Guangzhou, but also admits students from 11 other provinces, Hong Kong, Macao and also from overseas.

Research centres and other partnerships

The University has up to 57 research institutes and centers specializing in wide range of fields including the Institute of Educational Software, the Earthquake Engineering Research and TestCenter, the Institute of Educational Sciences, and the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology.

GU has also established a number of cooperative educational entities including the College of Textile and Garment, the College of Urban Construction Engineering, the College of Technology and Trade, Sontian College, Hua Ruan Software College, the School of Municipal Works and Construction. Academic exchanges and cooperation with overseas institutions have always been an important part of the University's operation. GU has so far established partnership in a wide range of disciplines with universities and academic institutions of the United States, Australia, France, Russia, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Sweden, and the Chinese-speaking region including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Past, Present and Prospect

With a history of over 50 years and having been authorized to operate graduate programs since 1984, Guangzhou University has produced a large number of highly qualified talents for China and has now become a key base for producing talents needed by Guangdong Province's social and economic development, and scientific and technological development. With the construction of the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center located on the Xiaoguwei Island 小谷围岛) in progress, GU is now fully committed to the mission of developing itself into a modern, comprehensive university with innovative ideas and local characteristics for producing talents of highly practical strength, becoming one of Guangdong Province's key universities, and joining China's leading tertiary educational institutions of its type in the nearest future.
