History

In September 1992, the Reverend Donald N. Sills founded GWC as a branch of now-defunct Coral Ridge Baptist University. He was the first GWC president. Current president Oliver DeMille, then an undergraduate student at Brigham Young University, was named one of the three original faculty during the first school year, and served as the sole faculty member in the school's second year. DeMille was apparently enrolled in CRBU correspondence courses at the time.

Because Sills "was concerned by the idea of opening a branch of a Baptist school in Utah" he "decided right at the beginning that we would not discriminate in any way based on religion."Quote box

The first day of class was held September 21, 1992. That first year, the three faculty (DeMille, William Doughty, and Shanon Brooks) "were going through some of the material for the first time right along with the students."

In January 2002, the school became independent of CRBU and control was transferred to the George Wythe Foundation, a Utah-based nonprofit.

Through the years, the school has variously been housed in the garage and then conference room of a Duck Creek, Utah, lodge; the bottom floor of a retail center on Main Street in Cedar City, Utah; and its current facility on Sage Drive in Cedar City. The school is constructing a new campus (eventually to be its main campus) in Monticello, Utah, where it has set up temporary headquarters in the former Hyland Hotel. On March 26, 2008, the foundation registered with the Utah Department of Commerce to do business as George Wythe University. Accreditation

In 1999, DeMille indicated GWC aimed for accreditation by 2002, [cite web |url=http://newsletter.gwc.edu/pre/december1999.pdf |title=Be The Change You Wish To See In The World |accessdate=2008-08-09 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last=DeMille |first=Oliver |authorlink=Oliver DeMille |coauthors= |date= |year=1999 |month=December |format= |work=The Statesman |publisher=George Wythe College |pages= |language=English |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote=We are also putting the finishing touches on a cutting edge business plan which outlines George Wythe College's intermediate and long-term goals. A few highlights include: 2002 Accreditation target, 2004 Campus construction target, 2005 Five graduates of the Thomas Jefferson Degree ] but as of August 2008 it remains unaccredited. This lack of accreditation makes it difficult for students to enter graduate programs at accredited universities. According to GWC, since 2006 it has sought accreditation with the American Academy for Liberal Education (AALE), which has since served a twelve-month suspension imposed by the U.S. Department of Education's National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) for not setting minimum standards for what students must learn at the eight colleges it accredits.

According to GWC, accreditation from AALE would enable students to participate in programs authorized under the Higher Education Act and other U.S. federal programs. GWC says it expects to know whether or not its attempt has been successful by Spring of 2009. [cite web |url=http://newsletter.gwc.edu/archive/CampusNews/39 |title=An Update on Accreditation |publisher=The Statesman |date=May 2008 |accessdate=2008-05-12] AALE accredits eight other institutions.

The school does not offer statistics on how many students with degrees exclusively from GWC have attended outside graduate programs, although its "The Statesman" newsletter contains stories about one student being admitted to law school at the University of Oklahomacite web |url=http://newsletter.gwc.edu/pre/statesman_08_12.pdf |title=A GWC Student Attends Law School |accessdate=2008-08-09 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last=Nuttall |first=Kyle |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=George Wythe College |pages= |language=English |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote=I want to erase that stigma as best I can by first telling the story of how I got into law school without an accredited degree, and then by explaining how I was much better prepared than almost any of my classmates. ] and another at Pepperdine University, [cite web |url=http://newsletter.gwc.edu/archive/Spotlight/17 |title=From Rural Mexico, to GWC, to Pepperdine School of Law |accessdate=2008-08-09 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last=Valenzuela |first=Roberto |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=George Wythe College |pages= |language=English |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote=Given the quality of my undergraduate education, it was perhaps inevitable that I would end up pursuing intellectual challenge once again in my postgraduate life. Fundraising

Financial aid

Effective February 1, 2008, the school raised tuition 98% across the board, then immediately began offering a "merit scholarship" that reduces the new tuition rate by 47% for qualifying students. According to Shanon Brooks, this tuition increase was "designed to move closer to the industry standard for the quality we provide." Course credit for selling services on behalf of the college

Students can earn course credit as well as money towards tuition by selling a variety of services (including phone, payroll and web hosting services) on behalf of the school. GWC uses a fund raising organization called Comanity to sell these services, [cite web |url=http://comanity.com/about_us.php |title=About Comanity|accessdate=2008-07-05 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=www.comanity.com|pages= |language= |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ] and profits from sales are split three ways among Comanity, GWC, and the student (applied directly towards tuition). In addition to earning money for themselves and the school, GWC offers students course credit (field experience credits) for selling through Comanity. Money raised through Comanity can also be directed toward construction of the school's new Monticello, Utah campus. Students can sell during both the school year and the summer.

WeSquared.net

In July 2008, GWC launched www.WeSquared.net, an affiliate subscription website that for $9.99 a month offers "daily content, exclusive articles, resources and GWC audio downloads."cite web |url=http://www.wesquared.net/about |title=What is We Squared? |accessdate=2008-08-08 |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=George Wythe College |pages= |language=English |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote=We Squared proudly supports the mission of George Wythe College.
