Geoffrey Gaberino

Geoffrey Gaberino

Geoffrey ("Geoff") Steven Gaberino (born July 18, 1962 in Dallas, Texas) is an American swimmer, who won a Olympic medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

Gaberino attended the University of Florida, where he was a member of the school's 1983 and 1984 NCAA Championship teams. Gaberino earned a gold medal in LA's 1984 Olympic Games, having boosted the 4x200m free-relay team to the final. He was also an American and World Record Holder in the same event.

A fourteen-time All-American at the University of Florida, Gaberino served as Team Captain in 1983 and 1984 when they won the Men's NCAA Swimming Championships. Before that time, as a standout swimmer at The Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN, he led the team to an Eastern Prep School Championship in 1980. Gaberino has been inducted into the Tennesee Swimming, Chattanooga Sport, University of Florida Sport and Baylor School Sport Halls of Fame. Gaberino received his BS from UF in 1984 and an MBA four years later.

Gaberino and his wife Susan live, with their sons Wilson and Spencer, in Gulf Shores, Alabama where they own a small vacation rental property management company www.GSVacationRentals.com. Gaberino currently serves on an Alabama City of Excellence (ACE) Economic Development Committee, and is a board member of The Academy of Arts & Sciences. He has served on The Waterway Commission in addition to coaching youth baseball and serving as a Boy Scout leader.

His role in ensuring that every Georgia middle school student could hear that message in a program called "Olympic Day in the Middle School" earned him the honor of being asked in the 1996 Olympics Opening Ceremony to be one of the eight flagbearers of the Olympic flag, which along with the lighting of the Olympic flame, signals the beginning of the Games.
