Alexios Doukas Philanthropenos ( _el. Αλέξιος Δούκας Φιλανθρωπηνός, died ca. 1276) was a Byzantine nobleman, with the rank of "protostrator", and Grand Admiral ("Megas Doux") of the 13th century.
In 1262, the year after the recapture of Constantinople from the Latins, Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos sent him, in command of the combined Byzantine-Genoese fleet, manned by the new corps of "Gasmouloi" and "Prosalentai", to attack the Venetian-held islands of the Aegean Sea. [Bartusis (1997), p. 49] In 1270, he was landed with an army at Monemvasia, and for the next two years operated in the Morea, [Bartusis (1997), p. 58] and later assisted Licario to reconquer Negropont (Euboea). Until 1276 (the probable date of his death) he continued to lead the Byzantine fleet in campaigns against Latin-held Aegean islands. [Bartusis (1997), p. 71] He had one daughter, whose name is unknown, but who was the mother of the prominent general Alexios Philanthropenos the Younger.
