Harveys Lake is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It is the largest natural lake contained entirely in Pennsylvania. Harveys Lake Road is the famous road that encricles the lake. It is named after Benjamin Harvey, who founded the borough in 1781 and was a member of the Sons of Liberty, an eminent colonial-era group that eventually defeated the notion of Great Britain's Stamp Act. The population was 2,888 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Harveys Lake is located at coor dms|41|21|48|N|76|2|38|W|city (41.363335, -76.043989)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 6.4 square miles (16.5 km²), of which, 5.3 square miles (13.9 km²) of it is land and 1.0 square miles (2.7 km²) of it (16.17%) is water. The lakes depth is about 200 feet at it deepest.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,888 people, 1,185 households, and 791 families residing in the borough. The population density was 540.1 people per square mile (208.4/km²). There were 1,735 housing units at an average density of 324.5/sq mi (125.2/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.10% White, 0.14% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population.

There were 1,185 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the borough the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $37,656, and the median income for a family was $51,319. Males had a median income of $31,059 versus $25,528 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $22,795. About 3.0% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 6.9% of those age 65 or over.
