EMD 645

EMD 645

The EMD 645 is a family of diesel engines built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division for locomotive, marine and stationary engine use. Chronologically, the 645 series falls between the earlier 567 series and the later 710 series. It is still supported by EMD.

History

The 645 series engine entered production in 1965 and was a development of the earlier 567 engine. It had a larger bore, nine and one-sixteenth inches instead of eight and one-half inches but maintained the same stroke. Engine speed was also increased, from 800/835 to 900 revolutions per minute. EMD built SD40 demonstrator #434 in July 1964 to field test the 16-645E engine. Another eight SD40 demonstrators #434A-434H were built in 1965, along with a GP40 demonstrator #433A. Finally in December 1965 and January 1966 the first three SD45 demonstrators #4351-4353 were built to field test the 20-645E engine. When the 645 engine entered production it was first used in EMD's "40 series" (GP40, SD40) in the 3,000 horsepower, sixteen cylinder form, and in 3,600 horsepower, twenty cylinder form in the SD45.

Specification

All 645 engines are two-stroke 45 degree V-engines. Each cylinder is of 645 cubic inches (10.57 liters) displacement, hence the name; with a bore of nine and one-sixteenth inches (230.2 mm), a stroke of ten inches (254 mm) and a compression ratio of 14.5:1. The engines are fitted with either a single or twin roots blower, or a mechanically assisted turbocharger depending on required power output

Versions

Notice :
The Danish Railways DSB (Danske Stats Baner) also have some MZ Mark III locomotives based on this engine, most were build by NoHAB in the 1970's.
By today, most have been decommisioned and some even sold to Australia. DSB still have a few MZ Mark IV left, that are still used today.
The engine used in the MZ III was a 3300 HP turbocharged version, though wether or not it is one of the ones shown in the above table is unknown, thus it does not figure in the table.
