The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is part of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. It was the first institution of its kind in the world. As the world's second oldest school of public health (the oldest school is Army Medical School created in 1893, and its present day form: Walter Reed Army Institute of Research), the Bloomberg School is a leading international authority on public health dedicated to protecting health and saving lives. The school's mission is to protect populations from illness and injury by pioneering new research, deploying its knowledge and expertise in the field, and educating scientists and practitioners in the global defense of human life.

Overview

Originally named the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the school was founded in 1916 by William H. Welch and John D. Rockefeller. It is the largest public health school in the world, with 530 full-time and 620 part-time faculty, and 2,030 students from 84 countries. It receives nearly 20 percent of all federal research funds awarded to the 39 U.S. schools of public health, and has research ongoing in the U.S. and more than 90 countries. It has consistently been ranked the number one school of public health by "U.S. News & World Report".

The school was renamed the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health on April 20, 2001, in honor of Michael Bloomberg for his financial support and commitment to the school and Johns Hopkins University. Johns Hopkins School of Public Health is renowned worldwide and had been consistently ranked as the top school of public health in the United States by "U.S. News & World Report". Famous alumni include Virginia Apgar, D.A. Henderson, Alexander Langmuir, Antonia Novello, and Alfred Sommer.

Priority

A case can also be made that the Army Medical School (AMS), founded by U.S. Army Brigadier General George Miller Sternberg, MD in 1893 was the world's first school of public health and preventive medicine. The AMS was the precursor institution of the current Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).

Campus

The JHSPH is located in the East Baltimore area right next to Johns Hopkins Medical Institute (JHMI) on N. Wolfe Street. The entrance hall on the Monument Street side of the building is the new front entrance. The building has nine floors and features an observation area on the top floor. The school is served by local buses as well as the JHMI shuttle from the Homewood campus of the Johns Hopkins University.
